What a mess. A gas leak on Route 31 in Pennington on Tuesday morning (December 10th) has the road closed in both directions until further notice, according to the Hopewell Township Police Facebook page.

PST Traffic reported all morning that both directions of Route 31, specifically between Route 295 and the Pennington Circle, were blocked. Police reported that homes in that area had been evacuated as Elizabethtown Gas investigated, but, an update at 11:30am said most residents that were evacuated have been allowed back in their homes, but, the road remains closed.

The cause of the gas leak is still not known at this time. The gas company is still working on the issue and fire crews are still on scene.

Hopewell Township has advised it will keep residents updated through its Swift911 emergency management notification system. If you don't get those notifications, you can sign up here, according to Community News.

If you're driving in that area, Scotch Road can be used as an alternate.

An earlier update from Hopewell Police said that the Hopewell Township Municipal Building lobby is open to the public until 4:30 pm today, and can be used as a resource center to stay warm and charge electronics.
