Traffic Alert: Project closes lanes on Route 1 bridge into NJ
🚧 1-2 lanes will be closed northbound heading into New Jersey on Route 1
🚧 Drivers headed to the Trenton Transit Center will be impacted
🚧 The Calhoun Street and Bridge Street bridges will pick up extra traffic
It could be a challenging week for drivers on the Route 1 bridge between Morrisville and Trenton as a maintenance project will close off lanes.
Heavy traffic is expected Monday as the Delaware River Joint Toll Bridge Commission will begin a week of closures in the northbound lanes Monday that are scheduled to run through Saturday. Works will also be done on the approach to the bridge
The schedule calls for up to two northbound lanes closed between 9:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. Two lanes will be closed Saturday morning 7 a.m. - 3 p.m.
The Bridge Street bridge and Calhoun Street bridges will likely pick up extra traffic during the week as drivers look for alternative crossings. The work will cause delays for those exiting Route 1 onto Warren Street and at Route 33 to reach the Trenton Transit Center.
The nearly $6 million project is the first rehabilitation of the commission's second busiest bridge in ten years. It includes milling and paving of all lanes and shoulders in both directions plus 11 ramps owned and maintained by the commission.

More than paving
The project also includes the cleaning and sealing of concrete bridge decks, repairs to concrete that has become pitted and chipped or is flaking, or peeling on the bridge decks and median barriers.
Curves on the ramp over Route 29 northbound will also be improved, the roadway restriped and drainage pipes cleaned.
The work on the bridge is subject to weather and other considerations. A date for work on the southbound side has not yet been announced by the commission.
The bridge was built in 1952 and carries an average of 53,000 vehicles daily as of 2023, according to the commission.
The busiest bridge DRJTBC bridge is the Route 78 bridge with an average of 63,000 vehicles.
