SOUTH RIVER — A woman is recovering after officials say her husband cut off her hands and a foot in an attempted murder in their home in June.

Police went to a home on Kamm Avenue in South River on June 18 and found a 35-year-old woman with multiple stab wounds, according to Middlesex County Prosecutor Linda Estremera. The man, Amgad Girgis, 46, was pronounced dead at the scene after taking his own life, while the woman was taken to a hospital, according to Estremera.

Mayor Peter Guindi told New Jersey 101.5 that the severed foot and hands have been reattached at Cooper University Medical Center. She is currently undergoing rehabilitation.

"She is a remarkable person. Her will to fight to go to see her kids again, there's no words to express it," Guindi said.

Church caring for children during mother's rehabilitation

The church attended by the mayor and the family, St. Mary Coptic Orthodox Church, an Egyptian Coptic Orthodox church in East Brunswick, has been caring for her children, ages 12 and 7. Guindi did not disclose details about what led to Amgad Girgis' actions.
