My favorite ongoing Marvel Cinematic Universe subplot is Gwyneth Paltrow not knowing who is in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, despite the fact that she has appeared in at least six of its movies. First, she had no idea she appeared in Spider-Man: Homecoming, despite the fact that her cameo was one of the big highlights of the movie. Now, according to Marvel Studios’ Kevin Feige, she didn’t know why Samuel L. Jackson would be hanging out at a Marvel 10th anniversary photo shoot even though he’s Nick Fury, and he’s been in like 15 of the MCU movies.

That is the story relayed by Empire, who recently hosted a Q&A with Feige to promote the upcoming Blu-ray release of Avengers: Endgame. They were talking about the (SPOILERS) funeral scene for Tony Stark at the end of the film, and how they took the 10th anniversary Marvel Studios group photo that went viral on the internet the same week, because they had all of the talent from all the movies assembled already to shoot that scene. (Almost everyone in it, minus the CGI characters, were actually there on set for the shot where the surviving heroes all pay their respects to the late Iron Man).

I will let Feige take it from there. (I added the bold for the key portion of his quote.):

With the funeral scene shooting before Black Panther, Infinity War. Ant-Man And The Wasp and Captain Marvel had even come out, there was some amusing confusion on set with the mass cast gathering. ‘Tom Holland [was] coming up to me, saying, 'Is that Michelle Pfeiffer? What is happening?’ laughs Feige. ‘Gwyneth Paltrow [was] asking why Sam Jackson was there, and the other actors [were] jumping in saying, 'What are you talking about? He's Nick Fury! You've been in movies with him.’ But it was really something special.’

I love this so much. Sure, Sam Jackson has been in many Marvel movies — including several that Gwyneth Paltrow also appears in! — but that is not any of her concern. Pepper Potts never did any scenes with Nick Fury, so why would she know who he was? It makes sense to me. I hope Gwyneth Paltrow continues to have no idea who anyone in the MCU is besides Robert Downey Jr. for the foreseeable future. Avengers: Endgame will be available on Blu-ray and 4K Ultra HD on August 13.
