Dictionary.com defines FOMO, or Fear of Missing Out, as "a feeling of anxiety or insecurity over the possibility of missing out on something, as an event or an opportunity."  It is a real thing and apparently, it can be very costly.

Couponing101.com recently surveyed Americans to find out how much they spent on things because of FOMO and residents of New Jersey ranked #2 in the nation.  In fact, the survey revealed that New Jerseyans, on average, spend almost $7,000 because of FOMO, behind only residents of Rhode Island.

  • 2 out of 3 people surveyed say Facebook is responsible for most of their FOMO.  Followed by Instagram, Twitter and Snapchat.

  • 17% of people surveyed have taken out loans to help fund their FOMO.

  • 35% of those surveyed say that when it comes to FOMO, they spend the most money on vacations.
