Frantic search underway for plane that went missing in NJ

BARNEGAT — The search for a small aircraft that may have crashed in southern Ocean County Tuesday afternoon did not locate a plane in distress.

Barnegat police said they were notified by the Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst around 3:15 p.m. after they had received a single Emergency Locator Transmitter (ELT) originating from a wooded area in the western end of Barnegat Township.

An extensive search using drones, off-road vehicles, helicopters and on foot by several fire companies plus the Ocean County Sheriff's Office and the New Jersey Forest Fire Service did not turn up a crashed aircraft.

The source of the ELT remains unknown. No other signals or reports of overdue aircraft were received, according to police.
