There is another adorable baby animal for you to see at the Cape May County Park & Zoo.

On Friday, zoo officials announced the birth of a female Grant's zebra on July 17, sired by the herd's stallion, Ziggy, and born to mother Lydia. The birth marks Lydia's fourth foal at the zoo.

What is a Grant's Zebra?

The Grant's zebra is a type of wild horse known for it bold black and white stripes, and it is the smallest and most common type of plains zebra.

They grow to about 4 feet tall at the shoulder and weigh between 500 and 700 pounds.

A Grant's zebra is native to the grassy plains and savannas of eastern and southern Africa. They are plant-eaters that spend most of their day eating grass.

The Grant's zebra is named after Lt. Col. James Augustus Grant, a Scottish explorer who undertook a famous expedition in the 1800s to determine the source of the Nile River.

There are 3 species of zebra: Grévy's zebra, plains zebra, and the mountain zebra.

The Grant's zebra is one of the six or seven recognized types or subspecies of plains zebras.

The Young Foal & His Mom

According to Cape May Zoo, the new arrival marks Lydia's fourth foal at the Zoo and is an exciting addition to the zoo's growing zebra herd.

Visitors may notice the young foal spending much of the day resting, an important part of healthy early development. Between naps, guests can watch the foal nursing, staying close to Lydia, and beginning to explore the exhibit alongside the rest of the herd.

Cape May Zoo Celebrates

"Every birth at the zoo reflects the important work taking place right here in Cape May County," said Commissioner Andrew Bulakowski, the board's liaison to the Cape May County Park & Zoo.

"It is a wonderful moment for our community, and I hope residents and visitors will stop by to welcome the newest member of the herd."

Cape May Zoo is open daily, 10 am - 4:30 pm, and it's free. Donations are accepted.
