For years, the cornhole has ruled American backyards, but a new game has emerged this year and the website Mashable.com is calling it the "must-have game" of the summer.

The game is called Kubb, which Mashable says is "a Nordic lawn game (sometimes referred to as Viking Chess) that involves throwing a wooden baton to try and knock over your opponents' wooden blocks."

(By the way, Mashable points out that Kubb rhymes with "tube.")

Kubb United says that competitive Kubb matches require 2-3 members per team, although a casual game can include more or fewer participants.

According to Wikipedia, although some people claim that Kubb goes back to the Viking Age, but that 1911 seems to be the earliest actual mention of the game.

The U.S. National Kubb Championships have taken place in Eau Claire, WI since 2017. A website dedicated to the Championships says that during its first year of existence, 35 players took park, but over each of the last 4 years, that number has grown to 450.  (Unfortunately, this year's Championships have been canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but next year's event is already scheduled for July 9-11, 2021).

Mashable has a list of sites where you can purchase a Kubb set, which includes everything that you need to play. Prices range from $42.99 all the way up to $74.99.

I did a Google search for Kubb sets and found a set on Target.com for $3049, a set on DicksSportingGoods.com for $49.99, and a snazzy tournament-edition set on Walmart.com for $74.99.

So what do you think? Will you be playing Kubb in your backyard or at your next outdoor party? Let us know in the comments.
