🔴The win firms up Democratic control of the House

🔴Turnout in the special election was very light

Democrats strengthened their majority in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives following Tuesday's special election in the 140th legislative district.

Jim Prokopiak overwhelmingly defeated Republican Candace Cabanas 67%-32% with just under 1% writing in other names. Turnout was light with just 23% of voters in 33 precincts casting a ballot.

The win gives Democrats 102 members and Republicans 100. Another special election is yet to be scheduled to replace Republican state Rep. Joe Adams from Pike and Wayne counties who resigned Friday.

Congrats from the governor

"Congratulations to Bucks County’s newest state representative and newest member of our House Democratic majority, Rep-elect Jim Prokopiak," Gov. Josh Shapiro wrote on his Facebook page. "I’ll see you in Harrisburg as we work to cut costs, invest in our future, and defend our fundamental freedoms. Let’s go get stuff done."

In a statement to 6 ABC Action News the current member of the Pennsury School Board proclamed victory.

"What I heard from voters is that Bucks County residents need help supporting their families, want control over their own bodies, and ensure they have the ability to chart their own paths in life," Prokopiak said in a statement. "I'm committed to taking my conversations with voters to Harrisburg and making their dreams a reality."

The special election was necessitated after Democratic incumbent John Galloway, who held the seat since 2007, won an election in November to become a magisterial judge in Falls Township.
