There's still plenty of summer left and no need to rush it, but with many New Jersey kids heading back to the classroom already next month, many parents are starting to think about their spending habits and how much back-to-school shopping will cost them this year.

With Labor Day falling on a later date this year, many New Jersey schools are starting school in August. I can't really remember my kids ever starting that early. The first day of school was always right after Labor Day, but I ran into a few stores recently, and back-to-school supplies are already front and center.

Many parents will be shopping throughout the summer to help keep their budget in order.

According to NerdWallet’s 2026 Back-to-School Shopping Report, shoppers estimate they'll spend just over $600 this year for back-to-school items including clothing, supplies and books.

The survey found that 36% of shoppers say they'll stick to a firm budget this year, and 25% plan to cut back on back-to-school spending.
