Earlier today, Bryce Harper made his Phillies debut in a Spring Training game in Clearwater, FL.  A little more than a week ago, Harper, who was baseball's most sought after free agent, signed a 13-year contract with the Phils.

According to the Associated Press, Harper's contract will pay him a total of $330 million.  The AP reported that the contract would pay Harper $30 million this year, $26 million annually from 2020-28, and $22 million from 2029-31.

Based on those numbers, we did a few calculations...

Payscale.com, the average Philadelphian makes $59,592/year.  In comparison, based on his career stats on
MLB.com, Harper will earn about $63,000 each time he comes up to bat.

Baseball Reference, the average baseball game was 3 hours and 4 minutes last season.  If it is about the same this year, Harper will earn over $1,000 every minute of a game.

The bottom line is that $330 million is a lot of money, but if Harper helps the Phillies win a few World Series Championships, fans will think he was worth every penny.
