Most Miserable Cities in New Jersey: 9 Towns That Made the National List
I’ll admit it, I love New Jersey. From our beautiful Shore towns to our amazing food, I truly enjoy living here.

But every now and then, a list comes out that makes you stop and say, Wait…really? That’s exactly what happened when Herald Weekly released its roundup of the “Most Miserable Cities in America.” And yes, nine towns from the Garden State landed on that list.
How Did They Decide?
The rankings weren’t pulled out of thin air. Factors like crime rates, poverty levels, median income, commute times, and even environmental concerns were used to determine which places earned a spot. In other words, it’s less about whether a town has good pizza (we know they all do) and more about the challenges people living there might face day to day.
Other cities across the country also made the cut, including Compton, CA; Cleveland, OH; Miami Gardens, FL; and Harlingen, TX. But with nine towns named, New Jersey stood out more than most.
The Nine “Most Miserable” Towns in New Jersey
According to the report, here are the Garden State cities that made the list:
Newark
Jersey City
Paterson
Elizabeth
New Brunswick
Trenton
Union City
Passaic
Plainfield
Each of these places landed here due to struggles like high crime, poverty rates, water quality issues, population density, and economic challenges.
But Is the List Fair?
Here’s the thing, lists like these never tell the full story. Sure, some towns face real difficulties, but they also have vibrant communities, rich cultures, history, and people who love where they live.

For example, Newark is home to world-class arts and dining, Jersey City is one of the most diverse cities in the country, and New Brunswick has a thriving college-town vibe.
So while the data paints a certain picture, locals know there’s more to the story.
What Do You Think?
Do you agree with the list? Do you think another New Jersey town should have made it, or that some of these deserve a little more credit? Most importantly, are you happy with the place you call home in the Garden State?
