If you adopted a dog from a shelter, you probably don't know the actual date that your furry best friend was born.  Some people celebrate on the anniversary of the day they adopted their pooch.  Meanwhile, many others celebrate today - August 1st, aka DOGust 1st.

In 2008, according to parade.com, the North Shore Animal League declared August 1 as "the national birthday day for shelter and rescue dogs."

The ASPCA says that 3.3 million dogs enter shelters in America each year and 1.6 million are adopted.
