A 14-year old boy was rescued from a canal at Cadwalader Park in Trenton on Sunday afternoon.

The teen was at the Trenton park with friends when their basketball rolled onto the ice of the Delaware & Raritan Canal. The boy went after the ball, which caused him to fall into the icy water.

The incident took place around 12:30 p.m. on Sunday afternoon.

The teen was rescued and taken to Capital Health Regional Medical Center.

At around 4 p.m., the teen was transported by medevac to Children's Hospital of Philadelphia.

Trenton residents have been urged by the mayor's office to take necessary precautions around the city's canals and rivers.

Mayor Reed Gusciora said via nj.com “Our hearts go out to the teen and his family and we pray for the best".

The warm temperatures on Sunday actually made the condition of the ice even more dangerous. The United States Geological Survey reported that the temperature of the Delaware River was 32.5 degrees on Sunday morning.
