What is New Jersey’s “Staple” Sandwich?
BuzzFeed just published an article called, "Every State Is Known For Having A Sandwich Staple --- Here's Yours."
Some of their picks are obvious...a lobster roll in Maine, a crab cake sandwich in Maryland, and a Philly cheesesteak in Pennsylvania.
I was curious..."what us the staple sandwich in New Jersey?" BuzzFeed says it is an Italian sub.
Is an Italian sub really the staple sandwich in New Jersey? I mean, a good number of people in the state don't even call it a sub, they call it an Italian hoagie.
I have nothing against a good Italian sub, but is there a better choice for NJ's staple sandwich? Maybe a pork roll and cheese sandwich? Or a Trenton (or Italian) hot dog?
As you think about it, here are a few other sandwich staples that I'm dying to try:
- The Bobbie in Delaware, which looks like a Thanksgiving sandwich;
- Fluffernutter in Massachusetts. (Yup, peanut butter and marshmallow creme on white bread).
- Polish Boy in Ohio, which appears to be a hot dog with cole slaw and french fries and maybe a barbecue sauce.
- The Elvis Sandwich in Tennessee --- Bacon, bananas and peanut butter.
