Local police departments in our area will be participating the NJ Police Law Enforcement Torch Run tonight. Police officers form East Windsor and Lawrenceville will join dozens of other law enforcement at TCNJ to raise money for special needs athletes.

According to Special Olympics website, the torch run began in 1981 in Wichita Kansas. It was created by the city’s Police Chief Richard LaMunyon. Two years later, LaMunyon presented it to International Association of Chief’s Police. It was later endorsed and turned into the “Founding Law Enforcement Organization.”

The flame will be carried through a few communities in our area. They include Kingston, Ewing, and Pennington. Patch.com has reported that over 2,500 athletes will participate in the games by playing softball, tennis, bocce, powerlifting, and doing other sports such as swimming, track and field, and gymnastics.

Officers will also be giving victorious athletes their medals. The games began this morning and run until Sunday.
