Self-checkout lanes at stores are becoming the norm.  You'll find them in most Target and Walmart stores.  The same goes for most large grocery stores.  And starting today, self-checkout lanes are being installed at the Wegmans in Centerton Square in Mt. Laurel, NJ.

That info came via a sign posted at the front of the store.

An article on a website called smartercx.com lays out the pros and cons of self-checkout lanes.

The article says the most significant advantage for retailers is reduced labor costs.  On the other side, consumers will usually find self-checkout lanes faster than traditional checkout lanes.

As far as negatives go, smartctx.com says that shoplifting, even if it happens by mistake, increases due to self-checkout lanes.  In addition, some experts feel that the loss of human interaction between a store and its customers may diminish brand loyalty.

Personally, I love self-checkout lanes, but I know there are some people that hate them.  Let me know what you think by leaving a comment below.
