Photos posted on social media show that several cars are involved in the accident (which occurred around 3 pm). Southbound lanes were completely shut down from Meadow Road through I-295 for much of the evening commute.

The conditions of the drives involved in the crash were not immediately made clear.

Officials had to close one lane on the northbound side of the highway as emergency responders cleaned up the accident scene, which appeared to involve a flipped over Jeep SUV.

As of 6:45 pm, the right lane was getting by in the accident scene. Traffic is very slow in the area as delays remain from Alexander Road through the busy shopping area to the entrance ramp for I-295.

Northbound traffic is moving pretty well at this time.

Lawrence Township Police are advising motorists to avoid the area for the time being, and several PST listeners reported basically being "stuck" inside the Nassau Park Shopping Center due to the highway closure this afternoon. It's likely that shoppers visiting any shopping center in the Route 1 corridor are experiencing serious delays as well.

Earlier in the evening, Google Maps showed all adjacent roads in the area (Alexander, Quaker Bridge, Province Line, Clarksville, etc.) are all seriously backed up in the area as well.

Given the fact that it’s a very busy shopping day, you'll need to pack your patience on Route 1 this evening.
