MTV has a history of filming shows in New Jersey, including the MTV Beach House and Jersey Shore, but now, for the first time, the VMAs are coming to the Garden State.

MTV announced yesterday that the 2019 MTV VMAs will take place on Aug. 26 at the Prudential Center in Newark.

In a statement, “MTV VMAs” executive producer Bruce Gilmer said, "New Jersey has an incredible music heritage and is home to some of the world’s biggest artists including ‘Chairman of the Board’ Frank Sinatra, ‘The Boss’ Bruce Springsteen, Queen Latifah, Bon Jovi, Whitney Houston, the Jonas Brothers, the Fugees, and Halsey. The list is wide and endless.  Now the moonperson plants its flag to celebrate all that New Jersey has given to music fans around the globe."

According to Wikipedia, in their 34 year history, the VMAs have only taken place outside of New York City or Los Angeles twice --- in 2004 and 2005, when Miami hosted the show.  Last year's venue, Radio City Music Hall in NYC, has played host to the event 14 times, more than any other venue.
