A popular New Jersey beach town just banned sleeping on the beach. What? Isn't that one of the best things to do on the beach, while using the ocean waves as your sound machine on a summer day? This sounds crazy, doesn't it? Let me explain.

Ocean City, NJ has banned sleeping on the beach and other public places

The shore town I'm talking about is Ocean City. OCNJ Daily is reporting that the City Council recently approved a new ordinance, with a vote of 7 - 0, that prohibits sleeping and camping on the beach, Boardwalk, and other public places in town.

Beach naps are an exception to the new rule

Before you freak out and worry you'll get caught dozing in your comfy beach chair or on your towel, there's a big exception to this rule..."beach naps" are still allowed. Phew! Don't worry, you won't get fined while drifting off, feeling the warmth of the sun on your skin, the ocean breeze in your hair, and the sounds of the ocean lulling you to sleep.

Ocean City officials have assured that common sense will be used when enforcing the new ordinance. The new rule is geared towards those who choose to camp or get a full night's sleep in several public spaces throughout town. You may not sleep or camp on the beach, Boardwalk, in parks, playgrounds, recreation fields, streets, alleys, sidewalks, pavilions, gazebos, benches, bus stops, and the bus station, according to the article. The Music Pier on the Boardwalk, Civic Center on 6th Street, and the Community Center on 17th Street.

The town's mayor says no problems, being proactive

The town's mayor, Jay Gillian, says there have been no problems yet with sleeping or camping in public places. The town is just being proactive in the name of public safety.
